telling minor stories to avoid a major one

Netflix Rundown: August ’10 by Barbecue Bros

I’m actually surprised I watched this many movies considering I didn’t watch any the last few weeks of the month.

She’s Out of My League (2009) – 5/10
– A pretty generic Apatow-wannabe comedy. Jay Baruchel, I know everyone wants to be a lead in a movie, but please choose your future movies more wisely. At least Alice Eve was super hot in it.

Mystery Team (2009)
– 7/10 – The first film from the Derrick Comedy team (which includes Donald Glover of “Community”). A bit different, but funny enough and well worth the viewing. Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation”) also co-stars, so it definitely had that going for it.

Favela Rising (2005) – 8/10
– A documentary on the afro-reggae non-violent music movement in the favelas (or slums) of Rio de Janeiro. Made by one of the guys who did the recent “30 for 30” documentary, The Two Escobars.

Kick-Ass (2010) – 8/10
– A fun, visually appealing movie from director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake). Chloe Moretz and Nic Cage were both awesome and I can’t wait for the sequel in 2012.

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) – 6/10
– Funny concept, and decently funny movie. Nothing about it stood out for me, though. Honestly can’t remember a ton about the actual movie.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) – 7/10
– Honestly, I watched this because Don and Lane considered going to see it in a recent episode of “Mad Men” (but instead ended up going to see Gojira). I love french movies (particularly french new wave), but I wasn’t quite expecting a “pop-art opera” where the dialogue is sung entirely (I’m not sure Don and Lane would have liked it either). Very french ending. Catherine Deneuve was lovely as always though.

Couples Retreat (2009) – 5/10
– I’ll always give a Jon Favreau/Vince Vaughn movie a viewing, but this just wasn’t all that funny.

Currently have out:
“Breaking Bad” Season 1 Disc 1 (2008)
The Bicycle Thief (1948)
The Stax Records Story

Tuesday Trailers: 8/4/09 by Barbecue Bros

A Serious Man – The next Coen Brothers movie. Enough said.

Fantastic Mr. Fox – The animation for this looks like nothing I can recall ever seeing. And of course, its Wes Anderson with a great voice cast that includes George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman. Based on the book by Roald Dahl.

Hot Tub Time Machine – Completely ridiculous premise and stars John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and Clark Duke. And according to IMDb, Chevy Chase, Crispin Glover, Lizzy Kaplan and Kate Walsh also star. I’m mostly interested to see if Clark Duke doesn’t completely piss me off. FYI NSFW red ban trailer you guys.
