The second show of a fun concert weekend in RDU. During Washed Out’s brief set, he tried to get the crowd into it as much as he could, even asking people to sing “the easiest chorus ever” to “New Theory” – “Da da da da da daaa” – while his white boy dancing came off as endearing. Beach House were awesome and smokey and nearly every one of their songs off Teen Dream came off as anthems in the small club setting. Really fun show.

Hilariously, Jim James kept referring to the venue as “Cocoa Booth” and riffing on the it being the birthplace of chocolate. We eventually got a great spot in the general admission pit and thankfully the battery for my Canon S90 didn’t crap out until the end of the show, despite the battery indicator flashing 5 minutes into the show.  Overall, I was really happy with the shots I was able to get.

I was mainly at The Evening Muse the night of tax day to check out The Ravenna Colt, but were also interested in checking out North Carolina band Roman Candle. Unfortunately, the rhythm section of The Ravenna Colt didn’t make it to this show (they apparently would be joining back for the rest of the tour), so it wasn’t a true representation of the band’s sound. However, the songs still sounded good, if a bit too stripped down. Roman Candle were fun and upbeat, though it was a shame that they started fairly late and by the time they finished after 1am most of the crowd had cleared out.

After their set I did get a chance to speak with the Johnny and  the guitarist from The Ravenna Colt about a variety of topics incuding the farm that Johnny owns (where My Morning Jacket recorded their early albums) as well as bourbon – both were super nice guys. I look forward to checking both of these bands out again.

I always enjoy going to shows at The Orange Peel and Vampire Weekend‘s first show in Asheville (as well as North Carolina) was certainly a memorable one.

This time we stood on the side of bassist Chris Baio. And he was awesome to watch, bouncing and dancing about stage all night long. The band played most of the songs from their two albums, and the crowd ate it up. Fun night, and well worth the two hour drive each way.

The xx/jj – 3/25/10: The xx, originally uploaded by twoguns.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from jj, but playing over pre-recorded tracks with her home movies in the background (as well as a video highlight reel of swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic) wasn’t quite it. To her credit, she did come and play her first song with an acoustic guitar. She even tried to bookend the set with another acoustic song, but the mic guy had already cut off the guitar when the guy in the group who was obviously drugged out of his mind failed to play even a guitar chord during the set.

The xx are already pros in terms of lighting and mood during their shows. The songs sounded tight, and there was nary a stray note during their set of nearly every song from their debut album plus a cover (not the Florence + the Machine one, though). As long as the band is given a night time set (essential for their music and lighting), I look forward to checking them out at Bonnaroo again.

Drive By Truckers

Neighborhood Theatre, Charlotte, NC

Another solid show from a very good live band. My fourth concert of theirs; I just wish I knew their songs better than I currently do. Or maybe it was that I paled in comparison to the serious DBT fanboy pack that Laura and I happened to stand by, with this being something like the 115th show of one serious fanboy in particular. I simply like and enjoy this band, but that dude loves and worships the band. I think he went from six to midnight when Stroker Ace took the stage; “Always on Stroker’s side. ALWAYS.”
