The fifth album from The National is due May 11 on 4AD records, and is entitled High Violet. May already has releases from LCD Soundsystem, Broken Social Scene, Band of Horses and the Hold Steady so its clearly shaping up to be a huge month.

In a recent interview, Matt Berninger described it as “meaner”  and also had the following to say about the record when talking to Stereogum recently:

We started out trying to make a fun pop record. I had the word HAPPINESS taped to my wall. We veered off that course immediately. We’ve narrowed it down to about 15 songs now and it’s going to be our best record (one song you can dance to) but it can’t be described as happy.

Although I would rather see them in a club, I’m interested to see how their show translates outdoors when I see them at Bonnaroo this year.

You know I can’t wait.

You’re right, that’s a heck of a May release lineup–and I’d put these guys at the top of it. Intrigued to hear what “meaner” will mean. Malkmus can tell them all about it when they play with him in Paris; he’s got it down.
