Three more down, three to go. Next up I will finish up the Antoine Doinel series with Love on the Run then its a toss-up between the final two movies I had planned to watch.

Antoine and Collette (1962) – 7/10 – The second part in the Antoine Doinel series from François Truffaut and is a short film that continues the story a few years after The 400 Blows. Antoine (played throughout the series by Jean-Pierre Léaud) is now in his late teens and chasing after Collette, a girl whom he sparks a friendship with at the local youth concert series. She never sees him as a love interest while he predictably becomes desparately in love with her. It ends badly for our protagonist as she never changes her mind. Overall, some of the acting was a little lacking but the trademarks of Truffaut are still there, even in the 30 minute runtime.

Stolen Kisses (1968) – 8/10 – The third part in the series, Antoine is now in his mid 20’s and can’t seem to hold a job after being dishonorably discharged from the military. Through it all, he falls for a shoe shop owner’s wife during one of his many jobs but ultimately ends up with Christine, whom he has been courting for years. Stolen Kisses is the first film in the series in color introduces the character of Christine (played by the beautiful Claude Jade), who would remain in the rest of the films in the series. There are many memorable scenes between her and Antoine which are playful and  romantic while ultimately laying the groundwork for the following films. Some beautiful filmmaking in this movie.

Bed and Board (1970) – 8/10 – Antoine and Christine are now married and are expecting a child, though this movie is largely about Antoine straying from his marriage with an exotic japanese girl. The two split up once Christine finds out about the affair but remain cordial in their sharing of child-raising duties of Alphonse. During this time away, Antoine comes to realize just how much he loves Christine and they ultimately reunite. Bed and Board continues the comedic and playful filmmaking of Stolen Kisses while dealing the very real situation of adultery. There are also some nice callbacks to earlier films, which is just a small part of the winking done in the film. Interestingly, Claude Jade, still beautiful and alluring, is a dead ringer for Amy Adams in this film.

Have now watched (in order):
Salvatore Giuliano (1962)
A Skin, A Night (2008)
The Underneath (1995)
The Bad Sleep Well (1960)
Antoine and Collette (1962)
Stolen Kisses (1968)

Bed and Board (1970)

Have yet to watch:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (BD, 2008)
Love on the Run (1979)
That Obscure Object of Desire (1977)
