Seriously Serious Concert No. 1: Ben Folds w/ Miniature Tigers, 3/1/09 by Barbecue Bros

Our first concert to open a seriously serious concert season was Ben Folds at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte, this being the second time I’ve seen him in a seated auditorium (first time was at Wait Chapel at Wake Forest a few years ago). To add to the allure of the night, it started snowing pretty heavily on our way to the concert.

Openers Miniature Tigers started as we got our beers and made our way to the seats. Knowing absolutely nothing about the band beforehand, I was pleasantly surprised by their songs as well as the stange banter of the lead singer (who reminded me of Stephen Malkmus in look and laid-back attitude). Avent and Susong promptly pointed out that a song sounded like Rooney mixed with Fleet Foxes, and then many of their subsequent songs ended up sounding like Rooney or Fleet Foxes or both. Not sure what their recorded output is like, but they seem worth checking out.

Following them was the Spartones, an a cappella group fron UNCG, which would have been a weird experience to take in regardless, but was made much weirder while sitting between two former college a capella singers.

Ben Folds came on shortly after – thankfully all gear was already setup before Miniature Tigers so it didn’t take long. I knew it going in, but he did start with a focus on songs from his new record. Besides “You Don’t Know Me” I didn’t really care to hear any, to be honest. If he had done all songs from Ben Folds Five and Rockin’ the Suburbs, I would have been happy. The middle part of the show with just him and a piano was nice, even if I wasn’t too familiar with all of  the songs. Thankfully, he kicked it up a notch and finished with BF5 and Rockin’ the Suburbs songs – “Kate,” Annie Waits,” “Zak and Sara” among them before ending the show with “Not the Same,” albeit with one of the Spartones on vocals. Nice touch to let him sing and the guy certainly did a good job, but I would have preferred for Ben Folds himself to actually sing it, as it is probably my favorite song of his. Pretty good show to start of the concert season, though with a few notable song exceptions for me personally.

Next show is Ryan Adams and the Cardinals in Columbia, SC on 3/12

I would like to believe that your a cappella experience was enhanced by sitting next to two former a cappella all-stars. I know the douche bag in front of us really enjoyed it.

Oh totally. By “weirder” I really meant “enhanced” or “noticeably improved.”

And is the douche bag you are referring to the friend of “that motherfucker over there?”
