telling minor stories to avoid a major one

Lists!: Favorite TV of 2007 by Barbecue Bros

I hadn’t intially planned to do a list for TV since its seasons are off-calendar, but then I figured why not…

1. The Office (NBC) – Consistently the best written show (comedy or drama) on tv.
2. Dexter (Showtime) – I had initially watched a few episodes in Fall 2006 when season one aired, but finally caught up with both seasons in 2007. Just a compelling show.
3. Friday Night Lights (NBC) – You’ve surely heard that it’s the best tv show no one is watching, and it really is.
4. Lost (ABC) – Much maligned in its third season (mostly because of its wacky airing schedule), rewatching season 3 on DVD makes me realize just how great this show is. Like one of the best dramas ever great, if I can be so bold.
5. The Riches (FX) – A surprise show on the list for me, since I never watch FX. Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver are fantastic as the leads in the series.
6. Kid Nation (CBS) – Bonanza bombs all around! Extremely watchable week in and week out.
7. Flight of the Conchords (HBO) – Full of deadpan humor and hilarious songs.
8. Planet Earth (Discovery) – Amazing footage from around the globe taken over a 5-year span. Can’t wait to watch on HD DVD.
9. 30 Rock (NBC) – The characters of Jack, Kenneth and Tracy are some of the funniest on tv. Not quite the same type of show, but 30 Rock manages to fill some of the void left by Arrested Development.
10. Extras: Season 2 and Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale (HBO) – Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s second series is nearly as classic as their first.

Some superlatives after the jump …

Close, but not quite in the top 10: Weeds (Showtime)

Fifth favorite comedy this year: How I Met Your Mother (CBS)

Most disappointing show: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC)

Guilty pleasure, horrible show: October Road (ABC)

Guilty pleasure, I’m not the target demographic: Gossip Girl (CW)

Most promising ensemble drama: Dirty Sexy Money (ABC)

Not as bad as everyone initially thought: Cavemen (ABC)

Watched the entire series to this point, but couldn’t care less if it was cancelled: Chuck (NBC)
