Lists!: 2007/2 Music Favorites by Barbecue Bros

Some excellent releases from some old favorites, but not a whole lot new for me so far this year. Only 2 artists on this list that I hadn’t listened to before.

1. The National – Boxer (Beggars Banquet)
– Extremely strong follow-up to Alligator; doesn’t rock out or shout out, but it worms its way into your head after repeated listens

2. Menomena – Friend and Foe (Filmguerrero/Barsuk)
– Clever pop record that is certainly one of the most hummable for me this year

3. Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge)
– Solid record, which is what I’ve come to expect from every Spoon release since Girls Can Tell

4. The Eternals – Heavy International (Aesthetics)
– Damon Locks brings the hybrid dub-funk-punk jams on this one

5. LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver (Capital)
– “All My Friends” is one of the best songs this year, but this one succeeds for me as an album where the self-titled felt like a collection of songs

5-10 after the jump…

6. Dan Deacon – Spiderman of the Rings (Carpark)
– The first song samples Woody Woodpecker and it just gets weirder and more experimental from there

7. Explosions in the Sky – All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone (Temporary Residence)
– More of the same from EITS, but still awesome nonetheless

8. Liars – s/t (Mute)
– Moves back from the drum-heavy, tribal nature of Drum’s Not Dead back toward the sound that they explored on They Were Wrong, So We Drowned

9. Ryan Adams – Easy Tiger (Lost Highway)
– Ryan Adams makes a professional country-rock record, save for the awesome cock-rock jam “Halloweenhead”

10. Eluvium – Copia (Temporary Residence)
– Loses the guitar for pianos, but the music is still as ethereal as ever

Honorable mention: Battles – Mirrored (4AD), Blonde Redhead – 23 (4AD), Rob Crow – Living Well (Temporary Residence), Simian Mobile Disco – Attack Decay Sustain Release (Wichita)

That might be around #15 for me right now. But “McFearless” is my jam from that album.
