State sports summer update by Barbecue Bros

We’re in the doldrums of summer sports-wise, so I’ll take whatever I can get. At Sidney Lowe’s summer press conference, he looked forward to his second season in charge of the Wolfpack and talked about the point guard situation and potential non-conference opponents in coming seasons.

Twelve months ago, Sidney Lowe was already starting to evaluate what would be his first NC State basketball team. At that time, he figured the one known, reliable commodity would be senior point guard Engin Atsur. One year later, the landscape is as different as Atlantic Beach and Asheville.

With the return of Gavin Grant, Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley, the Wolfpack will likely feature one of the ACC’s formidable frontlines next season. Also back will be starting shooting guard Courtney Fells and reliable forward Dennis Horner. A nationally ranked recruiting class will add more talent and depth at all positions.

The biggest question mark for Lowe and his staff one year later? The one position that wasn’t in question last June when Atsur was entering his senior campaign.

On the football front, with his first season just a few months away, Tom O’Brien has quietly made some great strides in recruiting:

Tom O’Brien has wasted little time flexing his strength as a recruiter at N.C. State. The Wolfpack had already received commitments from two ESPN 150 Watch List prospects, tight end Mario Carter (Charlotte/Independence) and athlete Tobias Palmer (Pittsboro, N.C./Northwood) and received a new commitment from Brandon Barnes (Bunn, N.C.) on Tuesday. Barnes is currently regarded as one of the top, versatile offensive skill players in the country by ESPN.

Howle was quick to note that N.C. State is creating a great recruiting buzz among North Carolina high school players and coaches about building its program with the best in-states players each year.
